Actress Joanna Lumley will now launch a new campaign called Debt of Honour to raise money for Gurkha veterans in Nepal.

The coveted award was presented by Liberty director Shami Chakrabarti last night to campaign leader Peter Carroll.

She said: "Our thanks to everyone for dignity, equality and fairness."A Daily Mirror campaign which gave Gurkha soldiers and their families the right to live in the UK has won the top Liberty award for human rights.

The Gurkha Justice Campaign, backed by actress Joanna Lumley, human rights lawyer Martin Howe and the Daily Mirror, ended in victory for the Gurkhas.
